A WEDDING AT BUSBRIDGE LAKES, SURREY
Somewhere deep in Surrey is a magical place where a man and his wife created a home, where birds of a variety of feathers could live peacefully in and around exotic trees and a quiet lake. The man passed away and now his son and wife carry on protecting these flocks and to do so, they have invited couples seeking something a little different and very much outdoors to enjoy this sanctuary. It’s utter bliss.
The photographs tell the story of a wedding at Busbridge Lakes and a couple who expertly co-ordinated an unforgettable wedding which I’m sure their gaggle of friends & family will savour for many years to come.
How you met?
We met through our very good friends. My close friend was dating one of Mike’s best friends (now they are also married) and they played cupid one NYE and that was it.
How he proposed?
I was born in Hong Kong on Victoria Peak and I always wanted to go back and visit. We planned this big trip together starting in Hong Kong, then on to Bali, Lombok and Gili Islands. While in Hong Kong we did the tourist thing and visited the hospital I was born in. Mike then suggested a hike up to the highest point on the Peak called ‘High West’ – I don’t think he realised how ‘high’ it was going to be! There was no one around on the trail and I was marching on ahead determined to reach the top, when we were almost there he called my name, and as I turned around he was on one knee and asked the question! It was such a magical time, we were alone at the very top of the Peak and we were both on ‘cloud 9’.
How you decided on Busbridge…what was so perfect about the place for you both?
It is such a funny experience looking at wedding venues; it is so surreal to think that the places that you are looking at will have such a significant role in one of the most important days of your lives. Mike totally surprised me with the proposal and I have never been one of those girls that has been planning their wedding since they were little – we were totally clueless about the type of venue you could get and what was out there. We both grew up in Surrey and knew that we wanted to keep our search close to there. We also had the idea that we would love a venue that was near a lake, because we love going to the Secret Garden Party festival and know that any good party needs to have a lake, for lighting, atmosphere and also for the pictures!!
Mike’s mother used to take Mike and his brother to Busbridge Lakes (as it is an exotic bird sanctuary) when the boys were little and it was close to their home, we did some research and were lucky enough to find out that they had recently started to host weddings. We booked in an appointment and as soon as we stepped through the little irongate, we all fell in love with this magical secret garden, it had to be the one! No words can describe how beautiful it is, the sounds of the birds that you hear and the peace and tranquility that the lakes provide. It was perfect for us, but it was a totally blank canvas, we needed to hire in suppliers for everything. That was what I thought was the best bit about it; we could decide on every detail that we wanted and make it completely personal to us. We knew that we also wanted tipis and found Beautiful World Tents, through our extensive research we found them to be the best and the most helpful too. The Lakes and the tipis worked incredibly well together and could not have looked more magical!
What made the day a success in your mind?
The whole day was a total dream, the venue allowed us to use our imaginations to make the whole day into what we truly wanted. On the day it was like our imagination had come to life! But what made it a total success is the amazing team of suppliers that we worked with. Mike and I keep saying how incredible the whole team we drew together were (and we had a lot of suppliers!) All of them worked together wonderfully and everything came together as we had planned! We cannot thank each and everyone of you enough- you were the dream team!
Any surprised on the day?
From planning a wedding in a tipi, on a lake, in a country garden that is really determined by a lot of variables and we had plans for every eventuality. Through all the planning the thing that you cannot plan is the weather, and the great British Summer really put on a show for us that day – it really showed off! That was the best surprise of all!
Any surprise feelings on the day?
I was really surprised how calm we felt, we had done so much prep for the day – that when it was there we were able to love every single minute, knowing that it was all under control and everyone had their plan! We both were totally and utterly overwhelmed by all the love from our friends and family on the day. Everyone said that they day would go by in a flash, but we both appreciated and enjoyed every moment of the day.
Words from the wise…what’s your advice on making a wedding a great success?
To make a wedding a great success; Mike would say music, music & music! We had a lot of it, for every part of the day and also doing something unique to you as a couple. I would say detail! We had a clear aim of what we wanted in our minds and wanted the same vibe. Set your aims high and you know that you can pull it off, you and your future partner are an awesome team and you know that you can support one another to make the best party! But the best success is being team mates for life!
